Gel coating is a modern way to make a manicure practical, shiny and beautiful. However, it is important not only to enjoy the result, but also to remove the coating correctly so as not to damage the nail plate. The fact is that the nail plate consists of thin layers of keratin, and if even the top layer is damaged, you can face fragility of nails, their thinning and painful long recovery. And in order for this not to happen, we advise you to read the article to the end.

Methods of safely removing the gel coating without damaging the nail plate

There are two main methods of removing the gel coating: chemical (using a remover) and mechanical (using a hardware cutter)

The chemical method is the most common for home use, as it is quite simple and inexpensive. To remove the gel coating, you need to lightly dust its top layer with a buff or file. This will help break the integrity of the top glossy coating. Next, you need to take cotton pads, wet them with a remover (a special liquid for removing gel polish) and put each pad on the nail, wrapping it with a piece of foil. If there are special clips for removing the gel, you should use them. When each finger is securely wrapped in foil, you should wait 10-15 minutes. After the time is up, carefully remove the foil and remove the remaining gel with an orange stick or a pusher. It is not recommended to remove the cotton pads prematurely, as the acetone contained in the remover may not have time to act. Also, do not forcefully remove the coating if it does not peel off easily from the nails. It is better to just repeat the procedure.

The hardware method, in most cases, is used by professionals in beauty salons. It is fast, effective, but requires certain knowledge and skills due to the risk of improper use of a hardware router. To perform the procedure, the master should choose a nozzle for removing the gel coating, which usually has an average level of abrasiveness and can be ceramic or metal. It is important that the nozzle does not touch the natural nail when cutting off the gel layer by layer. Movements should always be light, directed from the cuticle to the free edge of the nail. After removing the gel cover with the help of a hardware cutter, the master removes the remains with a buff, because the main thing is not to damage the nail plate.

Recommended means and tools for the procedure

To successfully remove the gel coating, special tools and equipment are required. We share the most necessary set:

  • Liquid for removing gel polish (remover), if we are talking about a chemical method. This special product based on acetone or alternative components softens the gel layer, allowing it to be easily removed without traumatizing the nail plate. We recommend paying attention to the composition and choosing those removers that additionally contain moisturizing components. The fact is that acetone dries out nails and skin, and moisturizing components reduce this effect.
  • Cotton pads for applying liquid. An alternative is manicure sponges, which are sold in specialized stores and do not leave lint when used.
  • Foil or special plastic clips for fixing cotton pads or sponges with liquid on the nails.
  • Orange sticks or pushers to remove the remains of the gel coating.
  • Buff for nails. It will be needed to remove the top glossy coating and gel residues after using a hardware router. It is better to choose buffs with an indicator of 180-240 grit of a rectangular shape.
  • Hardware router with a set of nozzles for mechanical removal of the coating. We recommend using ceramic nozzles of medium abrasiveness.

Tips for nail care after removing the coating

After removing the gel, the nails may need restoration, because they have not been in contact with air, water, and temperature changes for a long period of time, and because of this, they have become more vulnerable. Therefore, the first thing to do is to protect the nails from aggressive influences. To do this, it is advisable to wear gloves when working with chemicals and avoid prolonged contact with water.

To help your nails stay strong and healthy, pay attention to their hydration. This procedure is quick, but effective if followed systematically. For moisturizing, it is enough to buy any cuticle oil, but we recommend that you pay attention to jojoba oil, almond oil or grape seed oil in the composition. In the pharmacy, you can even buy liquid vitamin E in capsules and apply it directly to the nails for intensive nutrition. After purchasing the oil, rub it into your nails and cuticles with massaging movements every day. A good addition would be to use a nourishing hand cream before going to bed.

In addition to moisturizing nails, you can also help with strengthening varnishes. Means with calcium, keratin or panthenol will improve the condition of the nail plate if the manufacturer’s recommendations are followed. Usually, nails should be covered with varnish 1-2 times a week.

Common mistakes when removing the gel coating and how to avoid them

Despite the fact that the procedure for removing the gel coating seems quite simple, mistakes still occur in practice. Below you will analyze the most common ones and tell how to avoid them.

  • Peeling off the gel coating is a typical mistake for those whose coating has begun to peel off and it is not possible to immediately visit a beauty salon. The danger lies in the fact that the gel is tightly attached to the top layer of the nail, and when it is torn off, a part of the nail itself is removed. This makes it thin, fragile and sensitive to external influences. To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to remove the gel coating in a timely and correct manner. At home, you can use the chemical method. Or, while waiting for your visit to the master, polish the place of exfoliation with a buff.
  • The use of low-quality remover is dangerous due to its aggressive composition. To reduce the cost of the product, the manufacturer can use only acetone in the composition, without using moisturizing components. And this, as we already know, leads to drying of the nails and the skin around them. It is better to choose a remover of a well-known brand, with a safe composition and not to overdo the liquid on the nails more than indicated in the instructions.
  • Improper use of a hardware milling machine will trouble beginners. Without knowledge and skills, a quick procedure can turn into suffering with burns, scratches and excessive cutting of the nail. It is better to go to a beauty salon. If there is a strong desire to use a hardware milling machine at home, we recommend taking courses to get the necessary knowledge and practice.
  • Ignoring nail care after removing the coating. This leads to dryness of nails, flaking and loss of natural shine. It is better to spend 2 minutes a day to apply oil to the nails and cuticles and then cream to the hands, than to feel discomfort.

Therefore, if you remove the coating at home without experience, there is a risk of damaging your nails. This is especially true of the mechanical method. Therefore, in this case, it is better to contact a professional, without exposing yourself to danger.
